The Woermannkehre was named in 1975 after the member of the Reichstag, Adolph Woermann (1847 – 1911). The Hamburg native was a major force behind German colonialism through his “Woermann Line”. This shipping company profited massively from trade with the colony “German Southwest Africa”. During the genocide of the Herero in Namibia (1904 – 1905), he used Herero and Nama as forced laborers and handled military transports for Prussia with his shipping company.
